Can cause temporary blindness if using smartphone in the dark
The British Medical Journal recently reported on two cases of women who suffered temporary blindness for months due to the habit of reading news on their phones before going to bed.
According to doctors, these two women, one 22 years old and the other 44 years old, constantly use their phones in the dark. A warning about this unusual phenomenon has been issued by doctors.
Both women reported that they were unable to see for 15 minutes after using their phones. They were then taken to the hospital for medical examination, MRI scans and heart tests, but doctors found no abnormalities.

Using a smartphone in the dark can be harmful to your eyes. |
However, the reason lies in the way these people use their phones before going to bed. It is the habit of lying on the bed sideways, reading the news with one eye, while the other eye is covered by the pillow. The surrounding space is completely dark. That means, one eye will be exposed to the light of the phone screen, while the other eye is covered by darkness.
After a period of using the phone, the eye exposed to the screen will be temporarily blind because it needs time to adapt to the other eye which is used to the darkness.
According to doctors, temporary blindness is harmless and can be easily avoided by reading news on the phone with both eyes. Dr. Rahul Khurana, a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, said the condition is quite rare because few people use one eye to scroll through news on the phone while the other eye rests and does nothing.
It's a bizarre situation, Dr Rahul Khurana commented. However, he also warned phone users not to have this habit because it is not really helpful but only annoying and tiring.
