Blue House spokeswoman Ko Min-jung said the issues expected to be discussed include strengthening the alliance as well as dialogue to establish a lasting peace regime through the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
John Bolton is scheduled to arrive in South Korea on July 23. The US security adviser will also meet with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa and Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo, Ko said.
Bolton's visit underscores the US's interest in resuming nuclear talks with North Korea after a surprise meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the DMZ late last month. At the time, US officials said Washington and Pyongyang would hold talks that could take place in the "coming weeks". However, there is currently no information on the time or location of the talks.
Earlier, Mr. John Bolton visited Japan and South Korea on July 20. The visit took place in the context of increasing tensions between the two close partners of the US, increasing attention on whether Bolton will discuss with officials of these two countries about the cracks in the Japan-South Korea relationship.
The Blue House said that during the US President's visit to South Korea at the end of June, President Moon Jae-in asked the US to pay more attention to the rift between Japan and South Korea.
