“I am pleased to announce that, effective April 9, 2018, John Bolton will become my new National Security Advisor. I would also like to thank McMaster who has done an outstanding job and remains a friend. There will be a formal transition on April 9,” President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter.

A White House official said: President Donald Trump and Mr. McMaster had a conversation and both felt that “a new team” was needed. Mr. McMaster’s resignation was not related to any recent events and was the result of a conversation between the two.

I am grateful for the friendship and support of the members of the National Security Council, who have worked to provide the President with the best options to protect and advance our security interests.”
