Colombia has denied allegations that Colombian leader Juan Manuel Santos was involved in the assassination of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

"The allegations that the Colombian leader could be responsible for the attempted assassination of the Venezuelan president are absurd and completely unfounded," said a statement from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

"The Venezuelan leader has become accustomed to blaming Colombia in every situation. We demand respect for President Juan Manuel Santos, the government and the people of Colombia," the statement said.

Earlier, Mr. Maduro, in a televised address to his countrymen, accused right-wing forces of collaborating with the Colombian right and President Santos. He also stated that some of the organizers of the assassination were living in Florida, and asked US President Donald Trump to help fight against these "terrorist groups."
