The Dan Lai, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Vietnam, live upstream of the Giang River – in a remote and isolated area within the core of Pu Mat National Park, in Mon Son commune, Con Cuong district, Nghe An province. Thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, and the support of the entire community, the lives of the Dan Lai people are gradually improving. Their children now have access to well-equipped schools to learn to read and write.

(Baonghean)The Dan Lai, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Vietnam, live upstream of the Giang River – in a remote and isolated area within the core of Pu Mat National Park, in Mon Son commune, Con Cuong district, Nghe An province. Thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, and the support of the entire community, the lives of the Dan Lai people are gradually improving. Their children now have access to well-equipped schools to learn to read and write.

One rainy day, we followed the teachers as they navigated the rapids and waterfalls by motorboat upstream on the fast-flowing Giang River for three hours before reaching Mon Son 3 Primary School – a border area adjacent to Laos. We witnessed and documented the changes in facilities, living conditions, and learning environment for the 15 teachers and nearly 160 students there.

Teachers from Mon Son 3 Primary School crossed the Giang River to teach literacy in the village.

The teacher walked to the remote village.

The primary school in Khe Bung village, the most remote location at the end of the upper reaches of Khe Khang stream, has also received investment for the construction of modern facilities from kindergarten to grade 5, as well as a dormitory for teachers.

The Co Phat school branch now has its own school building and classrooms.

Principal Tran Xuan Hung instructs students on how to put on the red scarf.

The weekly flag-raising ceremony takes place at Khe Bung.
