US President's son-in-law visits Iraq

(Baonghean.vn)- On April 2, a senior official in the administration of US President Donald Trump said that White House senior advisor and also Mr. Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is visiting Iraq with Navy Admiral Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The unnamed official said Mr. Kushner wanted to visit Iraq in person and express support for the Iraqi government.

Details of the visit have not been disclosed, but the focus of the agenda is the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

IS has occupied large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria since 2014.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met with Trump for the first time on March 20. The Iraqi leader said he had won greater support from the new Washington administration in the fight against terrorism, but he cautioned that military action was not enough to eliminate terrorists.

Mr. Trump took office on January 20, pledging a new strategy to expel IS from Iraq and Syria. Before he took office, the Iraqi army had recaptured a series of major cities from IS, with the support of airstrikes by the US-led coalition and military advisers./.
