At 32 years old, Truong Duc Thuan, a resident of Dien Xuan commune, Dien Chau district, is still a young man who is wandering around. Thuan has not found a stable job and has not started a family until he was arrested for the crime of "Transferring"illegal drug trafficking".

This is the second time Thuan has appeared in court. Before that, when he was just 18 years old, Truong Duc Thuan was sentenced to 18 months in prison for "Violating regulations on road traffic control". After that time in trouble with the law, Thuan returned to his hometown and often went to the mountainous districts of Nghe An to do many different jobs. Once in Que Phong district, Truong Duc Thuan agreed to be a drug "transporter" out of greed.

Specifically, around the beginning of June 2020, Thuan was hired by a man named Duong to transport drugs from Que Phong district to Dien Chau district for a fee of 10 million VND, Thuan immediately agreed. At 2:00 p.m. on July 9, 2020, at Truong Banh intersection, Tien Phong commune, Que Phong district, Thuan received 30 packages of drugs with a total weight of 554.21 grams from an unknown man to bring to Dien Chau district as agreed with Duong in advance.

When Thuan was traveling by motorbike to Chau Binh commune, Quy Chau district, he was caught red-handed by the police. In addition to the drugs, the police also discovered 70 million VND on Thuan's person and sealed it.

On the day of the defendant Thuan’s trial, a group of relatives took a bus to attend the court. Among them was a 66-year-old woman. She was the mother of the defendant in the case. Attending the trial as a person with related rights and obligations, the woman sat quietly in her reserved row of seats.

At the witness stand, Thuan admitted to transporting drugs for the amount of 10 million VND. Regarding the amount of 70 million VND that the investigation agency sealed during the arrest, Thuan asked to receive it back. According to the defendant's statement, that amount of money was related to his mother. Thuan explained that he had previously lied to his mother about borrowing money to organize a wedding. But then he used the money he borrowed from his mother to buy a SH motorbike for his girlfriend to use. A short time later, he decided to sell the motorbike, so he had the amount of 70 million VND. "The defendant intended to return that money to his mother but was arrested by the police. That money is not related to the crime, so I request the court to return it to my mother," the defendant stated.

When asked by the representative of the Provincial Procuracy about what the defendant thought when he was old, but still played around, borrowed money from his mother to buy a car for his girlfriend? Thuan did not answer but remained silent. The defendant admitted his mistake and presented his difficult circumstances of his father's death and his mother's old age to ask for the lightest sentence.

According to his sister, Thuan is the fourth child in a family of five siblings. Due to his playful nature, Thuan dropped out of school after 7th grade. Born early, Thuan hung out with many friends outside of society and broke the law. The incident of his father passing away due to a serious illness made Thuan even more depressed.

Fearing that his son would go astray, his mother tried to encourage him many times. But with his playful nature, Thuan often went away from home to play around. As for Thuan borrowing money from his mother to organize a wedding but instead bought a car for his girlfriend, his family did not know.

Receive wife and children in court

During the deliberation that day, a young girl suddenly brought a child near Thuan. At this time, Thuan admitted that the child was his. Thuan said that he had previously known the girl in the mountainous district of Nghe An. The two had a child together but had not registered their marriage. "I was planning to hold a wedding but was arrested, so now the two sides still do not have a marriage certificate with that wife," Thuan said.

Seeing his wife and children in court, Thuan took the opportunity to turn around and talk to them, giving them instructions. Thuan told his fiancee to bring their child to his house as a daughter-in-law waiting for him to return. During the entire meeting, while Thuan appeared calm, sometimes laughing and talking, the young woman cried continuously. Every now and then she would run out into the hallway with her little child.

Considering the defendant’s actions as dangerous to society. In this case, the defendant has some mitigating circumstances such as: repentance, honest confession, grandfather participated in the resistance war and was awarded the Second Class Resistance Medal. Considering the whole case, the panel sentenced Truong Duc Thuan to 20 years in prison for “Illegal transportation of narcotics”.

The court ended, Thuan appeared calm and left. Only his mother and girlfriend were flustered and ran down to the prison car to meet Thuan. The image of women miserable because of Thuan made many people think.
