According to the announcement of the Ministry of National Defense, Mr. Hun Manet, who was trained at the US Military Academy at West Point, will be promoted to the rank of 4-star general to match the new position. In fact, since March, Mr. Hun Manet, who was then the Deputy Commander of the RCAF, has temporarily assumed the position of Chief of the General Staff in place of General Kun Kim, who is on sick leave.
Defense Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat affirmed that the appointment was “based on Mr. Hun Manet's ability and experience, not related to family background.”
This decision was made in the context of Cambodia preparing to hold a general election at the end of July 2018 and the ruling CPP party and Prime Minister Hun Sen are expected to continue to win.
