103-year-old woman beats Covid-19

A 103-year-old woman has recovered from the coronavirus and been discharged from hospital, despite the fact that the elderly are the most vulnerable group to death during the pandemic.

She had been treated in Semnan, central Iran, for about a week. She was "discharged after a full recovery," Semnan University of Medical Sciences President Navid Danayi told the news agency.IRNAMarch 17 but did not disclose the patient's identity.

She is the second elderly patient to survive the coronavirus in Iran. The other is a 91-year-old man from Kerman, southeastern Iran. After showing symptoms for three days, he recovered on March 16 despite having underlying health conditions including high blood pressure and asthma.

Covid-19 has appeared in 170 countries and territories, causing more than 204,000 infections, more than 8,200 deaths and more than 82,000 recoveries. Iran has recorded more than 17,000 infections, more than 1,100 deaths and more than 5,300 recoveries.

The WHO this month estimated the global death rate at 3.4%. But for people over 80, the death rate was 21.9%, according to a report the WHO conducted in conjunction with Chinese authorities.
