(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, at Cua Dong General Hospital, doctors from the General Surgery Department successfully performed colon resection surgery and treated abdominal wall hernia for patient Phan Thi V. (90 years old) in Duc Tho district (Ha Tinh).
The patient had a history of surgery for a perforated intestinal wound in war twice and open surgery for appendicitis. Recently, she developed a large bulge in the left abdominal wall, sometimes causing tension and pain accompanied by dull lower abdominal pain and fresh blood in the stool. The results of ultrasound, colonoscopy and pathology showed that the patient had sigmoid colon cancer and left abdominal wall hernia; she needed to be hospitalized for surgery and treatment.

The patient's tumor was quite large, narrowing part of the colon; if not operated on early, it would threaten intestinal obstruction, affecting the patient's life.
The patient was frail and had a history of multiple abdominal surgeries. After consultation, the doctors recommended surgery to remove the sigmoid colon and treat the abdominal hernia to prolong the life of the 90-year-old woman.

Dr. Thai Doan Cong - Deputy Director of the hospital, Head of the Department of Surgery, Head of the surgical team said: "Patient V. has a history of multiple abdominal surgeries, a high risk of intestinal adhesions, and is old and weak, so the prognosis is very difficult. Intraoperative assessment showed: The colon tumor was quite large, the surface was ulcerated and jagged, and had not invaded much around it. The doctors performed a resection of the sigmoid colon, restored digestive circulation, and restored the abdominal wall with an artificial mesh for the patient. After surgery, the patient's progress was favorable. After 7 days of treatment, the patient was completely awake, had good contact, stable blood pressure, dry surgical wound, recovered well, ate, slept, and digested well, and was ready for discharge."

According to Dr. Thai Doan Cong,Colon cancer is the fifth most common cancer after liver, lung, stomach and breast cancer. The danger of colon cancer depends on the stage at which the disease is detected. The earlier it is detected, the higher the success rate of treatment; if the disease is detected in the early stages, the 5-year survival rate can be up to 90%, however, less than 10% of patients detected in the late stages live more than 5 years.
Colon tumors are at high risk of developing in people aged 50 and over, smokers, drinkers, obese, sedentary, etc., or those with a family history of colon tumors developing into cancer. Normally, colon tumors do not cause symptoms, but when they develop, they can cause some phenomena such as: rectal bleeding, digestive disorders (diarrhea, constipation) ... When the colon tumor is large, it can partially obstruct the intestine, leading to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and intestinal obstruction.
Therefore, people need to have regular health check-ups, especially gastrointestinal endoscopy to check and detect early lesions for timely treatment advice./.
