88-year-old man hypnotized for heart surgery
Listening to the nurse chatting about his favorite topic, the old man gradually fell asleep so the doctor could perform heart surgery without using anesthesia.
The use of hypnosis is becoming more common in French hospitals. In 2015, the Institut Curie in Paris used hypnosis to operate on a woman with breast cancer. Most recently, an 88-year-old man was hypnotized for heart surgery at the University Hospital of Lille.
According toFrance Blue, the patient underwent aortic valve replacement surgery without the use of morphine or sedatives. During his time on the operating table, he was hypnotized by a specially trained nurse.
To prepare for hypnosis, the day before the surgery, the nurse visited the 88-year-old man and learned about his interests and passions. Following the principle of "leading the patient into the world they like", the nurse talked about the patient's hobbies of traveling and gardening, topics of particular interest to the patient. After that, the man "almost felt nothing" and fell asleep, leaving the medical team to do their job.

The operation ended and the patient immediately returned to normal. "He can talk consciously like you and me," Arnaud Sudre, head of the surgical team at Lille University Hospital, told reporters.France Blue.
The patient was also very satisfied with the surgery. "I would be happy to do it again if they asked me to," he said.
Next week, Lille University Hospital will perform another surgery using hypnosis. According toLCI, this medical facility has 90 staff members trained in hypnosis.
