According to current regulations on regular university and college admission, the subjects eligible for direct admission to university include:

Candidates with permanent residence for 3 years or more, studying for 3 years and graduating from high school in poor districts (boarding students of ethnic minorities are calculated based on permanent residence), as of the date of submitting application for admission according to the provisions of Resolution No. 30a/2008/NQ-CP of the Government on the Program to support rapid and sustainable poverty reduction for 62 poor districts;

Decision No. 293/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on targeted support from the central budget for 23 districts with high poverty rates applying infrastructure investment mechanisms and policies according to the provisions of Resolution No. 30a/2008/NQ-CP on the Program to support rapid and sustainable poverty reduction for 62 poor districts;

Candidates are ethnic minorities as prescribed in the Project on Education Development for Ethnic Minorities in the 2010-2015 period under Decision No. 2123/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister and candidates from 20 poor border and island districts in the Southwest region.

However, some universities have very strict regulations for these subjects.

For example, Foreign Trade University requires these subjects to have academic performance in grades 10, 11, 12 and to graduate from high school with excellent grades. In addition, the admission quota is also very small, only less than 1% of the school's total quota in 2014. The school said that it will base on the average score of the three-year summary score to consider admission in order from high to low.

The Diplomatic Academy requires that for direct admission, it only accepts applications from candidates with good academic performance in grades 10, 11, and 12 and who graduated from high school with a good grade. The quota is 10 candidates. The major that accepts direct admission is International Relations (Chinese).

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics does not limit the number of direct admissions, but the conditions for applying for direct admission to the school are very high. Specifically: The academic results of 3 years of high school (grades 10, 11, 12) are excellent or higher and the high school graduation exam results are excellent or higher.

Candidates who are eligible for direct admission must take a year of supplementary education before officially enrolling. The supplementary education program is determined by the Principal.
