Vietnam's situation and teams competing for Asian Cup 2019 tickets

Turkmenistan's 0-4 defeat to Uzbekistan in Group F on January 13th caused Yazguly Hojageldiyev's team to fall out of the play-off group. However, replacing Turkmenistan was not Vietnam, but Oman - a team also in Group F. Oman rose to third place in the group despite having no points. With a goal difference of -2, Oman is also right above Vietnam in the play-off group. The West Asian team has the same points, goal difference and number of goals as Kyrgyzstan - the team in Group C. However, Kyrgyzstan is above because it has only received two yellow cards, while Oman has been penalized with three yellow cards. Meanwhile, the two teams at the top of the play-off group are Thailand (Group A, three points, goal difference -2) and Syria (Group B, one point, goal difference -2).
In the final round, the situation in Groups C, D, E and F is identical. The third and fourth-placed teams in each group have no points and will meet each other. The team that wins by a large margin will have a better chance of advancing. Meanwhile, determining the third-placed team in Groups A and B is more unpredictable. All four teams in Group A still have the possibility of finishing in third place. Meanwhile, in Group B, only Jordan will advance as it is certain to be in one of the top two positions.
This is the first time the Asian Cup has 24 teams participating, divided into 6 groups of 4 teams each. After the 12 teams finishing first and second in each group, the 4 third-placed teams with the best records will advance to the round of 16. The criteria for ranking the third-placed teams are points, goal difference, number of goals, and fair-play points (based on the number of cards). The format is similar to Euro 2016 and many previous FIFA tournaments. History shows that the third-placed team with three points will have a 51% chance of advancing.
