The fight against corruption has entered a decisive phase.
Public opinion believes that the General Secretary will lead the handling of many prominent corruption cases, clearly concluding the case of Mobifone using state money to buy AVG.
On the last day of July 2017, 3 news items attracted special attention from the society. That was the direction of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on focusing on, actively detecting violations, speeding up the handling and strictly handling corruption cases. The Central Inspection Committee announced the conclusion on a series of violations by many organizations and individuals and recommended strict handling of those violations. And, the defendant Trinh Xuan Thanh turned himself in.
Social trend against corruption
At the 12th meeting of the Central Steering Committee on anti-corruption on the morning of July 31, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, in his capacity as Head of the Steering Committee, assessed that, "in recent times, the fight against corruption has become a movement and trend of the whole society."

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong concluded the meeting. |
This is a frank, substantive and true assessment of the problem. The good news is that this movement and trend is not the "lonely" action of any individual or organization, but of the whole society. Because corruption is a serious threat to the survival of the country and the regime. Our Party, State and people have recognized that danger and are determined to act. Of course, if we only stop at awareness and create a common spirit of the whole society to fight corruption, this fight will hardly achieve the desired results. We need a vanguard to lead the way and lead real action. Reality has proven that our Party has been and is truly pioneering and acting effectively.
Recently, the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption has focused on inspecting, auditing sensitive areas where public opinion suspects corruption, especially inspecting, concluding violations and taking strict disciplinary action against organizations and individuals that allow violations to occur.
The progress of inspection, verification of cases, investigation, prosecution and trial of serious corruption and economic cases has been accelerated. The first instance trial of 4/6 cases under the supervision and direction of the Steering Committee has been completed, with strict sentences applied, having a deterrent, educational and general prevention effect, and receiving public approval; the investigation and supplementary investigation of 8 cases under the supervision and direction of the Steering Committee have been completed; the settlement of 2 cases, 3 incidents, 16 recommendations in phase 2 of the cases of Pham Cong Danh, Huynh Thi Huyen Nhu, Pham Van Cu, Duong Thanh Cuong, Lam Ngoc Khuan, etc. has been completed.
Or as the conclusion of the Central Inspection Committee just announced on the afternoon of July 31 regarding a series of violations by many organizations and individuals. Among them, there are many violations by: The Standing Office of the Southwest Steering Committee and a number of individuals; The Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Vietnam Chemical Group and a number of individuals; Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ho Thi Kim Thoa... With the individuals violating are all officials who have held and are holding important positions in the political system.
Also yesterday, after nearly a year of being wanted, defendant Trinh Xuan Thanh (the subject of investigation in the case of intentionally violating State regulations causing serious consequences at the Vietnam Oil and Gas Construction Corporation (PVC) surrendered to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Security Investigation Agency - Ministry of Public Security.
These initial important results are thanks to the determination of the Party Central Committee and the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption, in which all agencies participated, no one stood aside. As the General Secretary said, "it is impossible to stand aside, no individual can do it even if they do not want to". That is the result of determination and action to fight corruption in a real way, without evasion or forbidden areas.
Early conclusion of Mobifone's purchase of AVG
Of course, the fight against corruption in our country is still fierce and arduous, but through the concrete results of the recent anti-corruption work, it shows that our people have faith in the strength and determination of the Party. The Party is truly determined to fight corruption and "The Party is truly proving that words must go hand in hand with actions".
For example, in the case of Mobifone Telecommunications Corporation investing a huge amount of money to buy the Global Audio-Visual Company (AVG), there were many different opinions right from the beginning (before the 12th Congress). Following the direction of the Secretariat, the Government requested the State Inspectorate to conduct a comprehensive inspection of this deal. Public opinion, especially officials and employees in the telecommunications industry and within Mobifone itself, raised many doubts about the reasonableness and legality of the deal. Was the State capital at Mobifone used for the right purpose, effectively, in compliance with the legal procedures, and was the purchase of AVG at the right price? Up to now, there has been no official conclusion on this case.
Therefore, at yesterday's meeting, the General Secretary urged the relevant agencies to complete the conclusion of this case in accordance with the law. This is one of the key activities of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption from now until the end of the year.
This is another vivid and concrete demonstration of the Party's spirit and determination to fight corruption to the highest degree.
Publicity, Transparency and the Role of the Press
And another strong belief that the entire political system has a basis for believing that the Party will succeed in this arduous fight against corruption is transparency, respect for the people and valuing public opinion in the fight against corruption. At the meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption yesterday (July 31), the General Secretary emphasized that information and propaganda work plays a very important role, contributing greatly to the fight against corruption; it is necessary to increase the provision of information to the press, ensure transparency and promote the role of the press in participating in supervision.
“Publicity is the ‘magic sword’ to heal wounds. In the coming time, the fight against corruption must continue to be strengthened, more resolute, more effective, without any obstacles or pressure,” the General Secretary emphasized.
With the convincing results as seen, public opinion is completely confident that, under the wise leadership of the General Secretary, the Politburo, the Central Executive Committee and the drastic participation of the authorities, especially the Central Inspection Committee, no force, no evil tricks can prevent or cover up the exposure of corrupt and negative acts to the light./.
