The phone conversation between US and Turkish Presidents Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the withdrawal of US troops from Syria caused “catastrophic events,” The Washington Post writes.

According to the publication's report, during a conversation on December 14, Mr. Erdogan once again raised the question of why the United States continues to provide weapons to the Kurds in Syria and support them while fighting IS, even though Mr. Trump had previously declared that he had won the war against the terrorists.

"You know what? Syria is yours. I'm out of there," Trump was quoted as saying by the source.

It is known that this phone call caused "catastrophic events even by Washington's standards during the Trump era". Specifically, the above story led to the resignation of the head of the Pentagon, James Mattis.

On December 19, Trump declared a resounding victory over IS in Syria. The White House later reported the start of the withdrawal of troops from Syria.

Mr Erdogan said the US leader made the decision after a phone call with him.
