Major Nguyen Van Thuong (80 years old, from Tay Ninh) was originally an intelligence officer of the Vietnam People's Army. In 1961, he was transferred to the reconnaissance unit and worked as a bodyguard for Mr. Vo Van Kiet, then moved to work in the intelligence industry. After 42 years since the country's reunification, he has a peaceful life in a house on Binh Loi Street (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City). |
Talking about his time as an intelligence agent, he said: "I remember in 1969, when I was carrying documents from Saigon to the base area, I was discovered, but I managed to hide the documents carefully before being arrested. The enemy bribed me many times with dollars, villas, cars and beautiful women, but I firmly refused to reveal anything." |
After more than 3 months of unsuccessful bribery, the US military tortured him by breaking his toes, smashing his feet, and sawing off his legs above the knee 6 times. |
His entire youth was spent in revolutionary activities, torture, and imprisonment in Phu Quoc prison. It was not until the Paris Agreement was signed in 1973 that he was released from prison and reunited with his family. |
The country was unified, he lived peacefully with his wife and two children. When his children got married, the former intelligence officer spent his old age with his wife, Mrs. Tran Thi Em (80 years old). |
Mrs. Em is also a female revolutionary soldier. At the age of 80, she is still lucid, taking care of her family every day, doing housework... |
"After the war ended, his body was not completely intact, making it difficult for him to do daily activities, especially walking. However, thanks to me always being there to take care of him and his soldier's will, he overcame everything to live a healthy life," Ms. Em confided. |
The former intelligence major once wore prosthetic legs. "But my legs were almost completely amputated, so it was inconvenient. I've given up using them for nearly 30 years now. In my free time, I watch movies, read newspapers, or just sit outside. Now I just hang around at home, so whenever friends come over, I'm very happy," he shared. |
In the past, he often attended veteran activities, accepted invitations to exchange and wrote memoirs. However, at the age of 80, the after-effects of war have caused his health to decline, and he rarely travels far from home. |
His daily life is easy, he can take care of most of the housework himself. In the morning and afternoon, he often goes for a walk with his wife and grandchildren near home. |
