Janey Trang Nguyen and her husband Derek Carr when they first got married. The American man born in 1986 and the Vietnamese woman born in 1990 got married after nearly a year of long-distance relationship.

"He said he wanted to contact me to learn Vietnamese. He really liked Vietnamese culture and wanted to visit here in the future. He wrote those things in Vietnamese, which surprised me," Trang said. At that time, Trang thought Derek was of Vietnamese origin. But when she asked, she found out that he was of American-German descent. "I have never met a Westerner who speaks Vietnamese like that," Trang exclaimed excitedly.

The first time they talked via Yahoo, Trang couldn't help but laugh when she heard her husband's accent. But she admired him even more because Derek spoke Vietnamese quite fluently and also knew how to tell jokes. "He told me he wanted to learn Vietnamese to marry a Vietnamese woman. Vietnamese girls are very beautiful, the most beautiful!", Trang recounted, still unable to stop laughing.

Trang and Derek's first conversation lasted for several hours. She wished him to soon find the person of his dreams and they promised to teach each other English and Vietnamese. So every day Trang and Derek texted and chatted. Wherever there was internet or phone signal, messages were sent and received non-stop. In a flash, a year passed, and the two gradually got used to caring and worrying about each other. "We became close without realizing it. Feelings had arisen but neither of us dared to confess," said the girl from the West.

Around Christmas 2010, Derek asked Trang if she believed in love and happy endings. Trang didn't think and answered frankly that she didn't believe in that. Trang's parents loved each other and got married, but her father passed away early, causing Trang to forget what a peaceful home was like. "Hearing that, he told me: 'Please believe in happy endings, or else, give me a chance to prove it. I know you've suffered a lot, I hope I can heal you and make you happy'. I was speechless with emotion," Trang shared. Immediately after that, Derek offered to introduce Trang to his parents. And she had a very special introduction via... Skype.

Dereck's parents thought he was crazy for insisting on marrying a girl he had never met.

After nearly a year of long-distance love, Derek wrote Trang's mother a letter in Vietnamese with the following content: He loved Trang very much, even though she was just a poor student, Derek promised to take care of her and worry about her for the rest of her life. "Reading his sincere lines with many spelling mistakes, my family both cried and laughed. Then he proposed via Skype, making my heart ache," Trang happily recounted.

When Derek told his family that he wanted to marry Trang, the American's parents burst out laughing, thinking their son was crazy. They couldn't understand why Derek insisted on marrying a girl he had never held hands with or met.

Despite his parents' objections, Derek still decided to go to Vietnam to ask for Trang's hand in marriage. The young couple held a traditional wedding ceremony right after Derek arrived by plane. "No one representing the groom's family attended the wedding. They thought that he and I were not mature in our thinking. He was also very hurt, but our joy was still complete," the girl from the West confided.

Derek spent the whole summer with his new wife, but then the time came for him to return to the US while Trang continued to wait for her visa. "The day we broke up, he cried a lot, and I forced a smile so my husband wouldn't worry. When I returned, I found a letter he hid in his backpack, he encouraged me to wait and we would be together again," Trang said.
