On the morning of December 27th, US Vice President Joe Bidel, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Chief Bill Bratton, and thousands of police officers from across the United States paid their respects to Rafael Ramos, one of the two police officers shot on December 20th, as he was laid to rest. The funeral was held at Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens. A giant screen was set up outside the church for those unable to attend the service.

On December 20th, Rafael Ramos and his colleague Liu Wenjian were shot and killed while sitting in their car in a Brooklyn parking lot. They didn't even have time to see their attacker. Authorities identified the attacker as a 28-year-old Black man named Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who committed suicide shortly afterward at a subway station. Before carrying out the attack, Brinsley posted a message on Instagram expressing his desire for revenge for the deaths of two Black people killed by white police officers who escaped legal consequences. The attack, carried out just before Christmas, shocked the entire population of New York and the 35,000 police officers in the area.

The attack on the two police officers has fueled tensions between the New York City mayor and the police force. The officers accused them of being under-equipped and of being too lenient with protesters in New York during demonstrations related to the deaths of Mike Brown in Ferguson and Eric Garner in New York.

Bill de Blasio had called for calm until the funeral was over. However, on Friday, a small plane flew over New York carrying the message, "De Blasio, we will not do what you say." According to some sources, this action was believed to be carried out by "a group of current and retired police officers."

Approximately 670 police officers from across the United States attended Rafael Ramos's funeral. Jet Blue Airlines is reportedly offering free transportation to anyone wishing to attend Rafael's funeral. Meanwhile, the funeral of Asian-American police officer Liu Wenjian has yet to be held.
