Extortion, sentenced to 30 months in prison
(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of March 6, the People's Court of Nghia Dan district held a public trial of the case of Vo Van Thang, residing in hamlet 6, and Vo Van Nam, residing in hamlet 2B, Nghia An commune, for the crime of "Extortion of property."
During the period from July to November, Vo Van Thang committed extortion twice, of which he and Vo Van Nam committed extortion once, specifically:
On the morning of July 10, 2017, Vo Van Thang went to the road bordering Tay Hieu commune, Thai Hoa town and hamlet 7, Nghia An commune (Nghia Dan) with the purpose of blocking people crossing the road to extort property. When he saw Mr. Le Duy Thu walking from Nghia An commune, Nghia Dan district to Thai Hoa town, Thang immediately went out to the middle of the road and used a switchblade to block Mr. Thu's motorbike, then "asked" for 100,000 VND. Mr. Thu gave Thang his wallet, checked the wallet and found only 70,000 VND left, Thang took all the money and returned the wallet to Mr. Thu, which Thang spent on personal expenses.

Then, on November 2, 2017, Vo Van Nam asked Vo Van Thang to meet Mr. Nguyen Thai Son, residing in Hamlet 4B, Nghia Dong Commune, Tan Ky District, who is currently constructing National Highway 48D in Nghia An Commune, Nghia Dan District to collect debt, Thang agreed.
At around 2:00 p.m. the same day, Thang drove Nam back to his house, while Thang went to the construction site to drive Nguyen Thai Son back to ask for the debt. When Son arrived at Thang's house, Nam asked Son to pay the debt, but Son told Nam that Tran Van Hau was responsible for the payment. Hearing Son say that, Thang went into the house, took a 1 meter long sword, placed it on the porch, and closed the gate to threaten Son.
Witnessing the incident, Thang's mother, Dang Thi Phuong, intervened and put away the sword, while Son took the opportunity to climb over the gate and leave. Seeing Son return, Nam told Thang to threaten Son to take the red and black Sirius motorbike, license plate 37Z9 - 8651, to force him to pay the debt. Thang agreed and took a stick about 60cm long and went out to find Son. Seeing Son's motorbike parked in front of Pham Thi Truyen's house, Thang walked over and used the stick to break the helmet hanging on the motorbike, then took his motorbike to Nam's house to hide it.
At the trial, Vo Van Thang and Vo Van Nam confessed their crimes. Applying Article 170, Clause 1 of the Penal Code, the court sentenced Vo Van Thang to 18 months in prison and Vo Van Nam to 12 months in prison for the crime of “Extortion of property.”
