Hearing someone calling for help, Hoang Duc Hai (in Hong Ky village, Hai Ninh commune, Tinh Gia district) swam out to save Loan and her child and brought them safely to shore. At this time, Hai was exhausted and was swept away.
Thanh Hoa Fire Prevention and Fighting Police then mobilized dozens of officers and soldiers along with many modern vehicles to the scene to search for victims.
However, due to the cold weather, the water level of the Ghep River rose, making the search difficult. After three hours of searching, the victim's body was found.
Local authorities said Hai was a fourth-year student at a university in Hanoi. He had just returned home for Tet when the accident happened.
