(Baonghean.vn) - As a soldier participating in the resistance war against the US to save the country, present in the army that entered to liberate Saigon 44 years ago, upon returning, Mr. Hoang Van Thai continued to contribute to the development of his homeland, always living by the motto "Respect God, love country".

Party Admission in the Middle of the Battlefield

During the historic days of April, Mr. Hoang Van Thai (born in 1948) in Hamlet 5, Nghi Xa Commune (Nghi Loc) recalled the memories of 44 years ago, when his unit marched to liberate Saigon.

“That day, the people of Saigon brought flags, flowers, and candy to the streets to welcome the liberation army. Everyone cheered, everyone was happy and moved…”

Veteran Hoang Van Thai

In 1970, while working for the Youth Union at the grassroots level, Hoang Van Thai registered for military service under the General Mobilization order and was assigned to Regiment 270 (Division 711).

The main fighting area was in the western region of Quang Tri, then gradually moved to Quang Nam - Da Nang, then marched to the Central Highlands.

During the Ho Chi Minh campaign (1975), Mr. Thai and his unit were present in the army entering Saigon's inner city, then were transferred back to the Central Highlands to perform military management duties.

During his 17 years in the military, Mr. Hoang Van Thai always completed his missions excellently, fought bravely, intelligently and courageously. Not afraid of hardships and sacrifices, he always volunteered to be at the forefront of every battle. Therefore, he was voted many times as an Emulation Fighter, sometimes receiving this title for 3 consecutive years (from regimental to divisional level).

Notably, in early 1973, young soldier Hoang Van Thai officially joined the Party. “The admission ceremony took place on the battlefield, right after a fierce battle. To this day, I still feel happy and proud because very few people had that honor back then,” Mr. Thai shared.

Exemplary in everyday life

In 1977, due to family circumstances, Mr. Thai asked to be demobilized and returned to his hometown to work in production. Since then, he has not had a single day off, because upon returning, he was trusted by the people and the locality to work as a hamlet policeman, then militia platoon leader, Party cell secretary, head of the commune Veterans Association, and was a member of the provincial Veterans Association Executive Committee.

Currently, Mr. Thai is the Party Secretary of Hamlet 5, Chairman of the Association of Agent Orange Victims in Nghi Xa Commune. He is dedicated to every task, putting all his heart and effort into completing it. In particular, in the hamlet, there are up to 70% Catholics, requiring the head of the Party cell to have real courage and experience to build solidarity between Catholics and non-Catholics, and together build the homeland.

As both a party member and a follower of God, Mr. Thai regularly encourages his family and parishioners to live a “good life, good religion”, and to take care of economic development. He himself is always conscious of setting an example. Thanks to that, the village’s life has been increasingly improved, with the average income currently at nearly 4 million VND/person/month, and the Party cell has achieved the title of “Clean and Strong” for many consecutive years.

In particular, Hamlet 5 is the leading unit in the whole commune in building new rural areas. Currently, all rural roads have been concreted. Many households in the hamlet have voluntarily donated land, moved fences inside or filled in ponds and fields. From 2018 to now, the whole hamlet has donated a total of more than 1,000 m2 of land to open roads, of which many parishioners donated a large amount.

Not to mention the newly built spacious cultural house with an area of over 130 m2, with 2 volleyball courts to serve the health training and sports exchange needs of the people in the hamlet. The total investment for construction is over 450 million VND, of which the district and commune invested 250 million, the remaining 200 million was contributed by the people. These results were partly thanks to the propaganda and mobilization efforts of Mr. Hoang Van Thai.

In addition, Mr. Thai's family has been recognized as a Cultural Family for many years, an example of perseverance in overcoming difficulties and raising children to study. Mr. Thai's eldest son is working as a commune police officer and Deputy Military Commander of the commune, and a son infected with Agent Orange has also graduated from university and has a job. At the same time, the family is also a pioneer in developing farm economy, earning about 100 million VND per year from shrimp and fish farming.

“Veteran Hoang Van Thai is an enthusiastic and dedicated person to his work, and has made many contributions to the socio-economic development movement and maintaining security and order in the locality. Therefore, he has become an exemplary role model for people to learn from.”
