US President Donald Trump will seek to overcome the constitutional two-term limit and run for re-election in 2028, according to former White House strategist Steve Bannon.

The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution states: “No person shall be elected President more than twice.” However, Bannon – who was one of Mr. Trump’s earliest supporters and led his 2016 campaign – believes Mr. Trump can still win a third term.

“I firmly believe that President Trump will run in 2028. I endorsed him,” Bannon told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on March 19.

“Someone like that comes along once in a hundred years, if we’re lucky. We have him now, and he’s very energetic. I’m a big supporter, and I’d love to see him back in 2028,” he added.

Asked how Mr Trump could overcome the constitutional ban on a third term, Bannon replied: “We are working on it.”

“I think we’ll have some alternatives, let’s say. We’ll see what the definition of term limits is,” the former Breitbart News chairman said.

“We have visions that are more far-reaching than Trump 2028. We are working on a lot of things. We are not ready to announce them yet,” he added.

Asked if he was implying a violent revolution or uprising, Bannon denied: “No. We are big believers in democracy.” He also said Trump supporters intended to mobilize voters, including those who were less engaged and less informed.

Trump has repeatedly joked about serving more than two terms. In January, he told a crowd in Nevada: “It would be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not just once, but two, three, or four times.”

Earlier this year, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles proposed a constitutional amendment to allow presidents to serve three, if not consecutive, terms. “It is critical that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course the Biden administration has set in motion,” Ogles said in January.

Mr. Trump was first elected president in 2016, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He ran for re-election in 2020 but lost to former Vice President Joe Biden. Mr. Trump won a second term last year, defeating Biden's chosen successor, Kamala Harris.

The two-term limit was written into the Constitution after President Franklin D. Roosevelt set an unprecedented precedent of four consecutive terms. Before that, US presidents usually served only one or two terms.
