Former Russian colonel convicted of treason attempted prison break
Former Russian Defense Ministry colonel Andrey Belyaev, convicted of treason, attempted to escape from prison in Dimitrovgrad and received an additional sentence for this failed escape, - the Ulyanovsk region law enforcement agency said.

The press received information about this incident from an anonymous person in the press department of the Ulyanovsk Regional Prosecutor's Office. According to the agency, the 52-year-old Moscow prisoner in August "took advantage of the weak control of the prison guards and escaped from the area of execution." The former colonel was arrested when he reached the main fence of the restricted area.
The court found the defendant guilty of escaping from prison and Belyaev received 11.5 years in solitary confinement plus his previous sentence.
In October 2016, Belyaev was sentenced to 12 years in prison for treason. The details of the criminal case were not made public, as the case is classified. The country that benefited from Belyaev's treason was not named, but the evidence of the case included a residence permit in Sweden.
