Former deputy border guard station chief on trial for deforestation

A Quang Nam border guard officer and 20 others were tried for violating regulations on forest protection declaration.

On the morning of January 19, in Quang Nam, the Military Court of Zone I (Military Zone 5) opened a trial for the case of destroying po mu forests in Nam Giang district. Among the 21 people on trial was defendant Le Xuan Chinh (former captain, Deputy Station Chief and Head of the Nam Giang Border Control Station).

22 people were prosecuted for the same crime.Violating regulations on forest exploitation and protection, according to Article 175 of the Penal Code.The trial lasted four days (January 19-22).

More than a year ago, authorities discovered a collection site of more than 280 pieces of po mu wood near the Nam Giang Border Control Station (under the Nam Giang Border Guard Station). The Nam Song Bung Forest Protection Department then initiated a case and transferred the case to the Nam Giang District Police.

During the investigation, authorities continuously discovered hundreds of po mu bricks hidden near the Nam Giang Border Control Station and in the premises of the Nam Giang Border Customs Sub-Department.

Quang Nam Provincial Police identified 60 po mu trees felled with a volume of more than 115 cubic meters of group 2A wood. The Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee's Inspection Committee announced that 4 officers of the Nam Giang Border Guard Station were disciplined due to related management responsibilities, including Captain Le Xuan Chinh...

The case file was then transferred to the military investigation agency for handling according to its authority.
