On June 9th, Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee, was revealed to be the source of leaks about the US government's surveillance of internet users and recording of phone calls.

In an interview with the British newspaper "Guardian," Snowden stated that his sole motivation was to inform the public about the "massive surveillance apparatus."

He stated, "I have no intention of concealing my identity because I know I did nothing wrong." But with the US government wanting a criminal investigation into the leak, Snowden admitted, "I don't expect to see my homeland again."

Snowden, 29, is a former technical assistant who worked for four years at the National Security Agency (NSA), where he also worked for several outside contractors such as Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. According to the newspaper, three weeks ago he packed his bags and left for Hong Kong, leaving behind a salary of approximately $200,000, his girlfriend in Hawaii, a stable career, and a loving family.

Snowden stated: "I am willing to sacrifice all of that because my conscience cannot rest if I allow the U.S. government to undermine the privacy, internet freedom, and fundamental liberties of people around the world with the massive surveillance machine they are secretly building."

Earlier, in an interview with NBC, NSA Director James Clapper called for a criminal investigation into the leaks to the American newspapers "Guardian" and "Washington Post," stating that the disclosures had caused "enormous damage" to U.S. intelligence capabilities.
