Saving the life of a newborn baby with organs outside the abdomen
Khanh Hoa General Hospital has just saved the life of a newborn with a rare birth defect.
The baby is recovering well and can breastfeed.
The patient is the son of a pregnant woman in Vinh Phuoc Ward (Nha Trang City), weighing 2kg. The baby was born with a defect in the right abdominal wall near the navel with a 4cm diameter hole. The baby's stomach, part of the liver, small intestine, and colon escaped through this hole, lying outside the abdominal wall. The surface of the intestine was dry but there were no signs of intestinal atrophy. Doctors diagnosed: abdominal wall defect, severe infection, high risk of death. Immediately after neonatal resuscitation, the baby underwent the first emergency surgery to correct the defect. The surgical team used a blood bag to make a modified silo bag to contain the intestines outside the baby's abdominal wall.
After surgery, the baby was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit for antibiotic treatment, intravenous nutrition, and a silo bag. Nine days after the silo bag surgery, the intestines in the bag turned pink again and had 50% entered the abdominal cavity. On May 6, the second surgery was performed to remove all the intestines and close the abdominal wall. The baby continued to receive antibiotic treatment, intravenous nutrition, intensive care, and mechanical ventilation.
However, after the second surgery, the baby had respiratory problems for about a day, severe sepsis, edema all over the body, and pale skin. The doctors persevered and actively treated the baby to save his life. Day by day, then week by week, the baby gradually recovered, was able to breastfeed, had normal excretion, and was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition with a good prognosis.
On the afternoon of May 30, the baby was re-examined and found to be completely healthy, bringing joy to the family and doctors.
