On October 11, a Ukrainian court sentenced former Prime Minister Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for abusing his power to sign a 2009 gas deal with Russia that severely damaged Kyiv's position.

Tymoshenko also had to pay $189 million in compensation for damages caused to Ukraine's Naftogaz gas company by the signing of the agreement.
