Mr. Chirac, 83 years old, who served as President of France for two terms from 1995-2007, was on vacation in Morocco when he suddenly fell ill. He and his entourage then flew back to Paris on a plane belonging to the Moroccan King, Mohammed VI.
France's right-wing former president has suffered a series of health problems and has rarely appeared in public in recent years.
Mr. Chirac also suffered a mild stroke during his second term in 2005. In addition, Mr. Chirac is also said to have a neurodegenerative disorder.
In December 2015, Mr. Chirac was hospitalized for two weeks for what his family said was "fatigue".
Previously, in 2011, due to poor health, Mr. Chirac was exempted by French prosecutors from appearing at his trial on corruption charges when he was mayor of Paris.
Despite being sentenced to two years, Mr. Chirac is still considered one of France's most beloved politicians.
