Former French President to run for re-election next term

(Baonghean.vn) - Former French conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy officially announced on August 22 that he will run for president again in the election to be held in 2017.

Mr. Sarkozy shared on his personal Facebook page: "I decided to run for the French presidency in 2017."

Mr. Sarkozy also added: "I feel full of energy to enter this battle, at a difficult moment in French history."

Mr Sarkozy, 61, is expected to launch his campaign on a hardline stance on immigration and security in France after a series of recent terrorist attacks in the country.

In his journey to the presidency, Mr. Sarkozy will first have to win the primary election to represent his party, which will take place on November 20. Mr. Sarkozy's main opponent will be former Prime Minister Alain Juppé, who is winning a lot of sympathy from the French people according to recent polls.

In 2012, Mr. Sarkozy lost to incumbent President Francois Hollande after his first term ended.
