Former Phu Quoc prisoner loves Vi Giam

(Baonghean.vn) - With a burning love for Vi Giam, former Phu Quoc prisoner Nguyen Van Vien took refuge in passionate melodies, and then spent most of his life on a journey of learning, cultivating and writing works that captivated people.

Mr. Nguyen Van Vien, hamlet 7, Phuc Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) can play most musical instruments, such as: flute, two-string fiddle, moon lute...

Although old farmer Nguyen Van Vien is old, he still maintains the agile and active style of Uncle Ho's soldier. Since he was still young, Vien often followed his brother to watch art performances and practice with him, so he fell in love with singing from a young age, especially the love for Nghe Tinh folk songs. At that time, he practiced playing the flute and guitar, and then learned to play many traditional musical instruments. At the age of 17, young Nguyen Van Vien joined the army at the sacred call of the fatherland. He was sent to the Quang Tri battlefield to fight. In January 1973, in a fierce battle with the enemy, he was unfortunately captured by the enemy and exiled to the notorious Phu Quoc prison with many of his comrades.

Nearly 10 days after Mr. Vien was exiled to the island, the Paris Agreement was signed, thanks to which the enemy relaxed its torture regime. During his imprisonment in Phu Quoc, Mr. Vien was fortunate to meet the famous musician Phan Mieng at that time, and was enthusiastically taught vocal music by the musician. With his passion and innate talent, Mr. Vien remembered everything he learned, and in no time he completed his "elementary" vocal music while in prison.

After being returned, Mr. Vien returned to his old unit. In addition to carrying out the main tasks assigned by the unit, in his role as the secretary of the Youth Union, he always took the lead in the cultural and artistic movements of the unit and was honored to receive the title of National Emulation Fighter and Military Region Emulation Fighter. In 1979, he was demobilized and returned to his locality.

Mr. Vien is diligently composing.

From then on, he began to devote more time and enthusiasm to his passion for singing. As one of the most important members of the cultural movement in Phuc Thanh commune, he played the role of composer, director and also performed directly on stage to serve the audience. Despite his busy life, after each day of plowing and farming, Mr. Vien always spent time with the members of the Phuc Thanh Vi Giam Folk Song Club to practice on every occasion.

For more than 30 years participating in the art movement, he has composed hundreds of poems, songs, plays, folk scenes, of which the most are folk scenes of Vi Giam. Many of his songs are loved by the people and highly praised for their simple, sincere, affectionate, and passionate lyrics such as Phuc Thanh, Canh En Dong Chiem...; especially, most of the folk scenes he composed and staged won high prizes in performances and festivals in Yen Thanh. The main content of the folk scenes he composed praised the love for the homeland, the daily changes of Phuc Thanh land, praised good people and good deeds and criticized bad habits right in the village...

From his passion, Mr. Vien always wants to pass it on to the younger generation.

With the desire to pass on the passion for Vi Giam folk songs to the younger generations in the village, he also founded an art club for hamlet 7. The club members are all simple farmers and children who share the same passion for Vi Giam folk songs from their hometown. Not to mention, when the locality organizes competitions and performances, he rushes to each hamlet's art troupe to support everyone in practicing regardless of the weather.

Mr. Tran Van Thanh, from the Cultural Committee of Phuc Thanh Commune, said: “There are few people as passionate about Vi Giam folk songs as Mr. Vien. For over 30 years, despite the difficult life, he has never given up his passion.
