Many research groups and experts say that cell phone waves cause cancer. Is that true?

Has it been proven that cell phone waves cause cancer?

A study in Kiev has just reinforced the hypothesis that cell phone radiation is linked to cancer. In the city of Berkeley, California, the city government recently passed an ordinance called the “Right to Know Law.”

When it goes into effect next month, the new law will require cell phone stores to display signs warning customers about the dangers of cell phone radiation. Stores will be required to warn customers that keeping cell phones in their pockets “violates state exposure regulations,” and “the effects are most dangerous to children.”

The bill has received mixed reviews. Both the New York Times and New York Magazine have published opinions that the law has no scientific basis. New York Magazine even called the law “misguided.”

However, the group supporting the law has found the necessary scientific argument. A scientific study by Igor Yakymenko said it had found “irrefutable” relationships between phone waves and the risk of cancer.

“These data are clear evidence of the risks posed by radiation waves to human health,” the Ukrainian researcher was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying.

By analyzing data from hundreds of other scientific studies, the research team concluded that using a mobile phone for 20 minutes a day for five years increased the risk of brain tumors by three times.

According to the research team, if you use your phone for one hour a day for four years, the risk will increase fivefold. In 2012, 6.4 out of 100,000 people had brain cancer, but Yakymenko said that number will increase rapidly.

Previously, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also said that mobile phone users should keep a minimum distance of 20 cm from it to significantly reduce radiation exposure. Adults and especially children can be affected by long-term radiation waves on the brain.

“Children need to be especially careful,” said Dr. Devra Davis, director of environmental oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, which has also warned its faculty and staff to limit cell phone use because of its association with cancer risks.

Similarly, a study published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology & Medicine explored experimental data on the metabolic effects of low frequency radiation (RFR) on living cells.

Dr. Igor Yakymenko from the National University of Food Technology of Ukraine, co-author of the study, said that oxidative imbalance due to frequent exposure to RFR not only causes cancer but also causes other minor disorders such as headaches, fatigue, skin irritation...

“These figures are a clear indication of the real risks of this type of radiation to human health,” he said. Yakymenko and his colleagues urged people to be cautious when using wireless technology devices such as phones and the internet.

The debate continues

The debate continues, however. Many scientists say that while it is certainly linked to cancer, there is still no solid evidence to support this claim.

“We have been looking for low-level side effects for 50 years and have not found any,” Jerold T. Bushberg, a representative of the American Medical Physics Association, told the New York Times.

“That's not to say it can't happen, but if there is such a risk it would be very, very low, otherwise we would have seen a huge increase in brain cancer cases.”

Others say this is due to the stigma attached to the word “radioactive.” Robert Cahn, a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, explains:

“Just because a cell phone emits radiation doesn't mean it's dangerous.”

He said cell phones emit less radiation than garage door openers, Wi-Fi routers, baby monitors, or even smart parking meters. But if Yakymenko is right, Berkeley’s new law could quickly spread to other parts of the country.

Dangers from phones

Although it is not certain that cell phone waves cause cancer or not, it is not really good for your health, why is that?

Increased stress levels

Excessive use of mobile phones can have a negative impact, increasing our stress levels through constant ringing, vibrating alerts, and reminders. In a study conducted at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, researchers hypothesized that there is a direct link between the psychosocial aspects of mobile phone use and mental health symptoms in young people.

The study participants, aged 20 to 24, completed a questionnaire and were followed up for a year. Ultimately, they concluded that high levels of mobile phone use were associated with stress and sleep disturbances in women, and sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression in men. Overall, excessive mobile phone use may be a risk factor for mental health problems in young people.

Warning: Radiation from wireless devices like cell phones and tablets may be linked to a variety of health risks, from cancer to brain diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Weakens your immune system

The parts of your phone that you touch frequently can harbor a lot of bacteria. In fact, the grease, oil, and dust you find on your cell phone after a day of use can contain more disease-causing bacteria than what you find on a toilet seat.

In a study conducted at the Queen Mary School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, researchers sampled 390 mobile phones and their hands to measure the levels of bacteria on them.

The results showed that 92% of the cell phones sampled had bacteria, 82% of the hands had bacteria and 16% of the cell phones and those hands had E. Coli (fecal bacteria). This bacteria can easily spread from one person to another.

Increases the risk of chronic pain

Cell phones require constant use in the palm of your hand, especially when sending text messages and emails. Responding to messages at a rapid pace can cause pain and inflammation in your joints. Back pain is also common with increased cell phone use, especially if you hold the phone between your neck and shoulder while multitasking.
