Has the 'culprit' that caused Hillary's crushing defeat been identified?

FBI Director James Comey's letter announcing the agency's reopening of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server may have played a key role in the Democratic candidate's defeat in the presidential election.

The Independent newspaper quoted information from Nate Silver, a famous statistician who founded and runs the FiveThirtyEight polling blog, saying that the former US Secretary of State would "almost certainly" become President if the election were held on October 29 - one day before Mr. Comey announced the letter.

According to Silver, late-deciding voters shifted to Donald Trump in the week before the election, causing Hillary Clinton to lose swing states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

On Election Day, Silver posted a message on the blog FiveThirtyEight stating that Clinton had an 81% chance of winning before the FBI director's letter, and that number plummeted to 65% a week later.

However, Mr. Comey's announcement is likely to be just one of many factors that will prevent Mrs. Clinton from becoming the owner of the White House. Polls show her lead has diminished, as it did in September, when the Democratic candidate was forced to admit that she had previously battled pneumonia.

Two days before the election, the FBI director released another letter announcing that the investigation had not changed its conclusions about Mrs. Clinton and that there was no intention to charge her.

In July, Mr. Comney said that although Hillary Clinton and her aides were "extremely careless" in handling sensitive information, there was no evidence they had intentionally mishandled classified information.

The results of the November 8 vote showed that although Hillary Clinton lost the election, she still won 2.7 million more popular votes than Mr. Trump. This number is said to have increased, and Mrs. Clinton even received more votes than President Barack Obama in 2012.
