""The U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOC) is actively conducting training to ensure readiness for contingency operations in North Korea, where countering weapons of mass destruction could play a key role," Yonhap today quoted General Raymond Thomas, head of USSOC, as saying during a session of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee.
General Thomas expressed concern about the growing threat from North Korea, stressing that this threat is no longer a regional issue but has global implications.
"In response, US Pacific Command (USPACOM) and US Forces Korea (USFK) are focused on maintaining credible combat power in the region, maintaining a strong posture against provocations, and partnering with our closest allies," Thomas said.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula are escalating rapidly as North Korea continues to launch missiles in defiance of the US and South Korea. Pyongyang has also declared its readiness to conduct a sixth nuclear test whenever it deems appropriate. In response, the administration of US President Donald Trump has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and two submarines near the Korean peninsula to demonstrate its power. On May 1, the US also sent two B-1B strategic bombers to conduct joint exercises with the South Korean military.
However, observers say tensions on the Korean peninsula are unlikely to escalate to the point of conflict, because all sides are aware of the consequences if war breaks out.
