Quynh Yen star apple specialty in season
(Baonghean.vn) - For decades, people in Quynh Yen commune have been planting star apple trees for shade. Also from these rows of shade trees, Quynh Yen people have another delicious and famous specialty fruit.
In Quynh Yen commune (Quynh Luu), from the main road to the village alley, every house grows star apples, at least 2-3 trees, at most up to ten trees. At this time, every tree is full of fruit.
Visiting the star apple garden of Ms. Le Thi Thuy Dung's family, she was harvesting fruit. She said that this year, all 12 star apple trees are bearing fruit, so the yield will certainly be higher than last year. Of the 12 trees, 4 were planted several decades ago. These trees grow tens of meters high, have luxuriant canopies, and each tree produces hundreds of kilograms of fruit.

According to Ms. Dung, in the past, her parents planted star apple trees in the garden mainly to provide shade and avoid sunlight from shining into the yard, but when there were fruits, it was only enough for the children to eat. However, after many years, the tree grew well, the branches and leaves spread out, the tree bore a lot of fruit, the family harvested them to sell at the market and had income.
From then on, around May to July is the time when the milk fruit tree bears ripe fruit, so the family harvested it, then advertised it on Facebook and received many orders, many of which were sent to Hanoi and Vinh city.
“Today the weather is starting to clear up, the fruits are ripe, the family is harvesting the ripe fruits. It is expected that by the end of the season, the family will harvest over 500 kg of fruit, including trees that produce large, beautiful fruits of about 3-4 fruits per kilogram. Currently, the family is selling at 40,000 VND/kg, each crop like this the family earns tens of millions of VND,” said Ms. Dung.

Next door, teacher Tam’s family is also harvesting star apples from five trees planted in the garden decades ago. According to her, in addition to her teaching salary, each year during the star apple season, she earns an additional 10 million to take care of her life. Growing star apples not only cools the house but also brings in income, while the investment and care only takes place once and the harvest lasts forever.
“In the garden, there are two colors of star apple fruit; one is purple when ripe, and the other is greenish-yellow when ripe. However, both types are sweeter and more flavorful when ripe than the star apples grown in the South and sold in the North,” said teacher Tam.
The entire Quynh Yen commune currently has about hundreds of households growing star apple trees with about more than 1,000 trees. Each harvest, villagers supply tons of fruit to the market. Especially in recent years, this fruit has been favored by people because it is nutritious, delicious, healthy and clean. Therefore, the selling price is also quite high.
Although this is not a tree that people grow for commercial purposes, in fact, from being a shade tree or an indoor ornamental tree, star apple produces fruit and sells for a much higher price than some traditional fruit trees such as grapefruit, custard apple, and guava. Realizing the effectiveness of growing star apple trees, many households have planted and grafted branches to expand their planting to increase income.
