European Parliament Deputies Talk About Consequences of Stopping Gas Supplies from Russia
Russia's suspension of gas supplies to the EU has become an economic disaster for European countries, French MEP Thierry Mariani told the Izvestia newspaper.
According to him, in this context, the EU has become more dependent on “unfavorable partners” such as the United States, which sells liquefied natural gas at high prices. At the same time, before the outbreak of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, 25% of the energy consumed in the EU was supplied by the Russian Federation. However, now Europe's energy security has been disrupted by anti-Russian sanctions, as restrictive mechanisms cut off the countries of the union from “important sources of cheap energy”.

“In the long term, all this will clearly create a gas market that is disadvantageous to the EU. What we are witnessing now, not least because of the ideology of the European Commission, is a deliberate decision to destroy our economy,” he added.
As German MEP Gunnar Beck noted, the European Union is not currently worried about a shortage of green fuel supplies, as gas storage facilities are almost completely filled. At the same time, it should be noted that since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the price of this energy source has increased significantly.
“Cutting off cheap Russian gas supplies will hamper any efforts to reduce inflation. The EU and Germany are harming their own citizens, whose living standards have fallen sharply over the past 15 months,” the lawmaker said.
According to media reports, at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, member countries will announce new sanctions against the Russian Federation. According to sources, they may also affect the Russian energy sector. In particular, the G7 and the European Union want to block gas imports through pipelines in those directions where Moscow has previously cut off supplies.
