Members of Parliament unanimously agreed to retain the country's name.
The name Socialist Republic of Vietnam has been used consistently from July 1976 to the present.
On the morning of June 3rd, under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Huynh Ngoc Son, the National Assembly discussed in the Assembly Hall the draft amendments to the 1992 Constitution.
One of the issues that National Assembly deputies have been concerned about and have commented on regarding the draft amendment to the 1992 Constitution is the name of the country.

Members of Parliament exchange views during a break.
Delegate Nguyen Van Tuyet (from Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) agreed to retain the name of the country as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
According to delegate Nguyen Van Tuyet, the name was coined in the context of Vietnam having just completed the national democratic revolution, unifying the country, and moving towards Socialism, clearly affirming the path and goals of building a socialist regime by the Party, the State, and the people.
The name Socialist Republic of Vietnam has been used consistently since July 1976 and has been officially enshrined in the 1980 Constitution and the 1992 Constitution. Furthermore, changing the country's name at this time would lead to unfavorable consequences, potentially even being misinterpreted as us deviating from the goal and path to Socialism, and would create numerous administrative procedures, requiring changes to the national emblem and name, causing expense and complexity.
Agreeing with the above viewpoint, delegate Tran Van Tu (Dong Nai delegation) stated that, according to a survey of 700 people in the province, only one opinion suggested changing the country's name. The majority of citizens agreed to retain the name Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This name is based on the foundation of the Vietnamese State's establishment from its inception, ensuring the people's democratic system. Changing the country's name without clear grounds and justification would cause unnecessary disruption.
Delegate Pham Duc Chau (Quang Tri delegation) agreed with the view to retain the name of the country as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam because this name has been associated with our country for 37 years and is very familiar to the people.
