The idea of acquiring helicopters and ships to fish in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands by Duc Khai Company demonstrates the heart and responsibility of a patriotic businessman.

These days, public opinion is focused on the news that a Saigon tycoon has invested in purchasing two helicopters and 100 ships with a capacity of 500-1,500 horsepower, worth thousands of billions of dong, to support fishermen in fishing in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and protect Vietnam's maritime sovereignty.

This tycoon is Mr. Pham Ngoc Lam - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Duc Khai Joint Stock Company (Ho Chi Minh City), who owns more than 20 companies in the fields of real estate, distribution, construction, warehousing, dry ports, petroleum, etc., with total assets worth thousands of billions of VND.

According to Mr. Lam, he has been outraged by China's illegal placement of the oil rig in waters under Vietnam's sovereignty. He is even more furious that many of his fishermen's boats have been rammed and severely damaged by Chinese vessels.

In response to this situation, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Duc Khai Joint Stock Company traveled to leading shipbuilding countries such as South Korea, Japan, and Australia to purchase 100 ships with a capacity of 500 to 1,500 horsepower to help fishermen stay at sea. This plan immediately received support from the Party and State leaders at all levels, as well as all shareholders of Duc Khai Joint Stock Company.

In addition, Duc Khai Company also purchased two floating docks from Taiwan with a capacity of 5,000 tons each, which will be placed in the middle of the fishing grounds (within a radius of 50 to 60 nautical miles) to receive seafood brought in by fishing vessels for sorting and preservation.

Separately, Duc Khai Company is negotiating with European partners to bring in two helicopters (each costing approximately 30 billion VND) to serve in rescue operations for fishermen in the islands. These two helicopters will be managed by the State and stationed on islands to conduct rescue operations nationwide.

Mr. Lam affirmed: "To date, the company has ordered 45 fishing vessels from South Korea, which are expected to arrive in Vietnam by the end of August; the remaining 55 (from Australia and Japan) will also be imported as soon as possible so that they can officially begin operations in early 2015."

Opportunities and success don't come by themselves.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Lam was born in 1968 in Quang Nam province and experienced a childhood filled with poverty and hardship. He began his career repairing cars and motorcycles. Thanks to his meticulousness and high skill, Mr. Lam gradually became a wealthy businessman. However, his business career also led him into legal trouble.

Starting his second business venture in early 2006, Lam received help from friends to become the exclusive distributor of Toshiba, Kenwood, Dongfeng, and other brands in Vietnam. He also built his own bonded warehouse to keep import costs low. From a car dealer who went to prison and then was released, Lam became a leading expert in the import-export field.

In the following years, Mr. Lam shifted to the real estate sector. Thanks to his Midas touch, Duc Khai Company (named after Mr. Lam's eldest son) prospered, expanding to 20 subsidiaries and employing hundreds of staff.

Currently, Duc Khai Company owns 24 real estate projects with a land fund of 150 hectares, many of which have already been put into use.

Most notably, the Ky Nguyen Residential Area project (Phu My Ward, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) covers an area of over 10.8 hectares, with a total investment of up to 4,800 billion VND. The project has 3036 apartments, and currently about 80% are occupied by Vietnamese and foreign buyers.

In addition, Duc Khai Joint Stock Company has many other projects currently under completion, such as the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital (Binh Chanh District), THE USEFUL APARTMENT project (Tan Binh District), and apartment complexes 257 and 289 (District 1)... Besides that, the company also has several projects such as quarries and gas stations in the central provinces that it has put into operation.

Despite his great success, Mr. Lam once shared that, for him, there is no secret. "Start with determination and integrity throughout the collaboration," Mr. Lam said.
