Chairman of the National Assembly of North Korea Kim Jeong Nam read the announcement on behalf of the congress on the decision to elect Mr. Kim Jong Un as Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea. Thus, in addition to the position of Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, Mr. Kim Jong Un currently holds state and military positions including First Chairman of the National Defense Commission (the highest authority according to the 2012 amended Constitution of North Korea) and Supreme Commander of the Korean Armed Forces.

Before this congress, Mr. Kim Jong Un was First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea.

The 1998 and 2012 amendments to the North Korean Constitution stipulated that the late President Kim Il Sung was the “Eternal President” of the DPRK, and the late President Kim Jong Il was the “Eternal General Secretary” of the Workers' Party of Korea.

After leader Kim Jong Un came to power, on December 30, 2011, the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea decided to appoint him as "Supreme Commander". At the 4th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea in April 2012, he was elected as "Member of the Politburo Standing Committee, First Secretary of the Party, Chairman of the Central Military Commission" and at the 5th session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly of Korea (National Assembly) in 2013, he was approved to become "First Chairman of the National Defense Commission".

The Workers' Party of Korea is holding its 7th National Congress. This is the first time in 36 years that the Workers' Party of Korea has held a congress with the participation of 3,400 delegates. No foreign delegates were invited to attend, including the Chinese delegation./.
