US officials have previously expressed concern that a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, expected in the coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its claims in the South China Sea, could prompt Beijing to declare an ADIZ over the area. China made a similar move in the East China Sea in 2013.
For its part, China neither confirmed nor denied that it has plans to establish an ADIZ in the East Sea, saying that a decision will be made based on the level of threat and that it has every right to establish an ADIZ.
Speaking to lawmakers during a session of Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, Minister Feng Shih-kuan said: "We will not recognize China's ADIZ."
The statement was made after Taiwan's National Security Bureau submitted a report to the island's legislature, emphasizing: "In the future, we cannot rule out China establishing an ADIZ. If China takes action to declare this, it could lead to a new wave of tension in the region."./.
