Taiwan is not satisfied with the Philippines' apology.

Taiwan continues to issue an ultimatum to the Philippines over the latter's killing of a fisherman from the territory.

Both Taiwanese leaders, Ma Ying-jeou and Jiang Yi-hua, have reacted after the Philippines issued an apology for the shooting death of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippine coast guard.

AP quoted Jiang as saying on May 15 that his administration was not satisfied with the apology offered by the Philippine representative in Taipei.

According to AFP, Jiang considered the apology unacceptable because it came from the "Philippine people" and not the government, since it was the coast guard that shot the fishermen.

Taiwan considered Manila's apology to be neither official nor sincere, and announced it would recall its representatives and discourage its citizens from traveling to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, on the same day, according to a spokesperson for President Ma Ying-jeou, he decided to stop accepting migrant workers from the Philippines to express his "deep dissatisfaction" with Manila's handling of the incident.

According to AFP, spokeswoman Lee Chia-fei said that President Ma was "very dissatisfied with the lack of sincerity and change in attitude from the Philippines" and had decided to recall Taipei's envoy in Manila.

Ms. Lee reiterated Mr. Ma's four demands, including a "formal" apology, compensation for the victims' families, the arrest of the person who shot and killed the fishermen, and the commencement of bilateral negotiations on fisheries as soon as possible. She also stated, "If the Philippine government cannot meet these demands by 10:00 GMT today (May 15), then Taiwan will implement the second phase of retaliation."

The AFP report stated that Taiwan's actions were taken despite the fact that the Philippines' de facto ambassador to Taiwan, Antonio Basilio, had issued an apology following a closed-door meeting with Taiwanese Foreign Minister David Lin on May 14.

Taiwan has confirmed that its navy and coast guard will conduct exercises in the area to demonstrate its naval strength.
