The Taiwanese government representative office in Vietnam has received instructions to closely coordinate with Hanoi to quickly "resolve the problem".

Taiwan's foreign ministry said the Foromosa waste discharge that killed fish in central Vietnam was an "isolated incident", and asked Vietnam to take measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Taiwanese businesses as well as the safety of property and people.

In the middle of the monthTaiwanese lawmakers have called on the government to investigate, saying the mass fish deaths could jeopardize policies that encourage investment in Southeast Asia.

On the afternoon of June 29, seven representatives of Formosa bowed twice to apologize to the Vietnamese people, admitting that the company caused an environmental disaster in four central provinces.

On behalf of more than 6,300 officers and employees, Mr. Tran Nguyen Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation, read an apology that lasted nearly 7 minutes.

The fish deaths occurred on April 6 near the Vung Ang industrial park (Son Duong, Ky Anh, Ha Tinh), then spread to the provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. About 70 tons of wild fish from the four provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien - Hue died and washed ashore, mainly bottom-dwelling species. Thua Thien - Hue alone had 35 tons of farmed fish die. Fishermen in the four provinces are in trouble because the sea fish cannot be sold, or are sold at low prices, not enough to cover fishing costs.

This is the biggest environmental incident to occur in Vietnam. Formosa has committed to compensate for pollution treatment and restore the marine environment in 4 central provinces of Vietnam with a total amount equivalent to over 11,500 billion VND (500 million USD).
