Greek ambassador to Brazil murdered

A police officer in Rio de Janeiro has confessed to killing the Greek ambassador to Brazil, Reuters news agency has reported.

Greek Ambassador to Brazil, Kyriakos Amiridis, 59, has been missing since the night of December 26. Two days later, on December 28, Ambassador Amiridis’ wife, Francoise, reported her husband missing to the police.

On December 29, Brazilian television channel Globo reported that police suspect the Greek Ambassador to Brazil has died, after discovering a body in a burnt car in Rio de Janeiro.

Globo published images of a burnt-out car in the Nova Iguacu neighborhood where Ambassador Amiridis went missing. The license plate of the car matched the one that Mr. Amiridis had rented.

On December 30, police officer Sergio Moreira, 29 years old, confessed to the police that he had killed the Greek Ambassador the night he went missing at a house in Nova Iguacu, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro.

Investigator Evaristo Magalhaes said that Ms. Francoise (40 years old) and police officer Moreira had arranged the murder of Ambassador Amiridis several days before.

According to Brazilian police, the wife of the Greek ambassador had an affair with the suspect. Both have been jailed. Police also arrested a nephew of the police officer.

In a letter to the Greek Prime Minister, Brazilian President Michel Temer said the murder of Ambassador Amiridis made him extremely sad and expressed his condolences to the Ambassador's family, friends as well as the Greek people.

The Greek Embassy in Brazil declined to comment on the incident. In Athens, Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Stratos Efthymiou said the government had no comment.

Mr. Kyriakos Amiridis served as Consul General of Greece in Rio from 2001 to 2004. He became Ambassador of Greece in Libya from 2012 until early 2016 when he assumed the position of Ambassador to Brazil.
