US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power visited Japan and South Korea on October 6 to discuss with the two allies the possibility of "tightening" sanctions on North Korea.

The US Mission to the United Nations said Ambassador Power will discuss efforts to effectively respond to the serious threats posed by North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

The United States is leading negotiations on a new sanctions resolution against North Korea that the UN Security Council unanimously approved last month after North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test.

Last week, Britain's UN Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said the Security Council was moving quickly toward agreeing on new sanctions, but the draft document had not yet been submitted to the 15-member Security Council.

After North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test, the United Nations Security Council in March this year passed a tough resolution targeting North Korea's mineral trade and tightening restrictions on its banking sector.
