US Ambassador to Canada Threatened with Death If He Does Not Resign
A package containing suspicious white powder was sent to Kelly Craft's Ottawa residence, along with a letter containing threats to kill Ambassador Craft if she did not resign.
Canadian and US authorities are investigating a threat against US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft after a package containing suspicious white powder was sent to Craft's Ottawa residence, along with a letter containing threats to kill Ambassador Craft if she did not resign.
Canadian media reported that an email was sent to all US Embassy staff in Ottawa informing them of the incident that occurred around 10:30 a.m. on June 15 after an employee retrieved a package from a mailbox outside Craft's residence and discovered white powder in a letter addressed to Craft.
Firefighters, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and a hazardous materials team were immediately dispatched to Craft’s residence and cordoned off the area around the upscale residence. However, authorities confirmed that the white powder was harmless.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland immediately posted a statement expressing her opposition to the threatening action.
“This intimidation is completely unacceptable,” Freeland wrote. “Ambassador Craft is doing a necessary and difficult job. Canada respects her work.”
Former US Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman expressed surprise when he heard that Ambassador Craft was threatened.
Mr. Heyman asserted that while American ambassadors are regularly threatened in “difficult places around the world,” he was “not in that situation” while serving in Canada from 2014 to 2017.
Diplomatic tensions between Canada and the United States have escalated after US President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and launched personal attacks against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during and after the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Quebec last week.
The incident caused many Canadians to have a negative attitude towards the Trump Administration./.
