In a meeting with US diplomats earlier this week, the Russian ambassador to the US warned the US government against another unjustified and illegal aggression against Syria, the Russian Embassy said.
In a statement issued on August 29, the Russian Embassy affirmed: "We have warned the US against another unjustified and illegal act of aggression in Syria. Escalating tensions in Syria does not serve the national interests of any party. We urge Washington to immediately provide evidence that could support this attempt to once again spread the issue of Damascus's use of chemical weapons."
“We have expressed our deepest concern about the signals from the US side that new attacks on Syria are being prepared under the pretext that the Syrians may use ‘chemical weapons’. We have conveyed our deep concern about these developments,” the statement quoted Ambassador Anatoly Antonov as saying.
“Many terrorist groups and fake humanitarian organizations, such as the White Helmets, may see this tone from the US side as a signal of preparation for another provocation,” Antonov added.
Antonov’s meeting with Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs David Satterfield and US Special Representative for Syria James Jeffrey was held at the initiative of the Russian side on August 27. The Russian Embassy described the talks as “constructive” and “professional”.
Major General Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, told reporters on August 27 that the United States is increasing the number of cruise missiles deployed to the Middle East, planning to target Syrian government forces after a staged chemical weapons attack that terrorists are about to carry out in Idlib province. He added that “this is another proof that” the United States intends to use the attack staged by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militants with the support of British intelligence agencies in Idlib province to blame Syrian government forces for using chemical weapons.
