A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Vietnam said that students who were denied visas to the US to take international science and technology competitions can supplement their information to resubmit their applications.

On the afternoon of May 3, Mr. Pope Thrower, spokesman for the US Embassy in Vietnam, said that if there is additional information or significant changes in circumstances compared to the last application, visa applicants can resubmit their application.

According to Mr. Pope Thrower, Section 222(f) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) does not allow disclosure of visa application information, including information related to the basis for granting or denying a visa, to anyone other than the applicant.

Therefore, the US Embassy cannot provide information to third parties about other people's visa applications.

While the vast majority of applications are approved, US law sets out criteria under which visa applications can be denied, Pope Thrower said.

Applications may be refused because the consular officer does not have all the information requested, does not meet the requirements for the type of visa applied for, or falls within the scope of the legal regulations that are not acceptable.

Previously, Mai Nhat Anh was one of two authors of the project “Saltwater distillation system into fresh water with vacuum technology using hydraulic pump by ocean wave energy”. Two students of “Phan school” were selected to participate in the international science and technology competition held on May 13 in the US, but Nhat Anh was denied a visa without knowing the reason.

This means that the two students' project will be canceled. Because the Ministry of Education and Training registered with the competition's organizing committee that the project had two authors, if only one person was present, it would violate the regulations.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that he had written a letter to the contest organizers asking for help. The Ministry of Education and Training continued to request the leaders of the Department of International Cooperation to send a letter to the US Ambassador to Vietnam, hoping to create opportunities for the remaining members of the delegation to be granted visas.
