Clouds like pipelines to the sky in Japan
A long, tube-shaped cloud stands out against the gray sky in Japan, attracting much attention.
The pale tube cloud, filmed yesterday in Niigata City in central Japan's Chubu Prefecture, stretched down to the ground from a cloudy sky. The cloud's large size in the video may be the result of an optical illusion, according to Long Room.
Locals who saw the tube cloud were amazed by the phenomenon. One person sent the footage to Weathernews, a weather service. When the company shared the video, it garnered 91,000 likes and more than 60,000 shares on Twitter in just two days.
In the video, the tube begins to dissolve from the ground to the top, seemingly being swept away. Within seconds, the entire tube has dissipated all the way to its base, connecting with the gray parent cloud hundreds of meters up.
According to meteorologists, this is an example of a funnel cloud. This type of cloud is often the starting point for tornadoes to form. If the cloud touches the ground or water, it will become a tornado or a waterspout. Funnel clouds are formed when a swirling wind spins a column of water made up of many droplets.
