On January 9th, authorities in New York City reported that 58 people were injured, including two seriously, when a ferry carrying hundreds of passengers crashed into Pier 11 at 9 a.m. local time (2 p.m. GMT) in the East River area, not far from Wall Street.

The ill-fated ferry, carrying 326 passengers and five crew members, met with disaster in normal weather conditions.

Police and firefighters were deployed to evacuate the injured from the scene, while other passengers received assistance right on the ferry terminal.

Witnesses at the scene said the ferry, named Seastreak Wall Street, was speeding as it entered the dock.

One passenger said the ferry entered the dock at "maximum speed" and crashed into "the right side of the pier." Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

In New York City, dozens of ferries carry thousands of people from New Jersey or Brooklyn to Manhattan every day.
