Negotiations on Iran's nuclear program: Success or failure?

April 1, 2015 14:56

(Baonghean.vn) - On Wednesday, April 1st, negotiations on the nuclear program resumed in Lausanne, Switzerland. However, observers say the outcome of the talks is currently very "chaotic".

On Wednesday, just hours after the meeting, negotiations on Iran's nuclear program were suspended. In interviews, representatives from Russia and Iran stated that progress had been made in the talks and that this could even be seen as the beginning of an agreement. Meanwhile, the US representative declared that no issues had been resolved in the talks. On the French side, Minister Laurent Fabius left Lausanne without making any statement.

On March 31, the foreign ministers of the P5+1 group (Britain, France, the United States, Russia, China, and Germany) also met to discuss a preliminary agreement on Iran's nuclear program. March 31 was the deadline for the parties to reach a preliminary agreement to resolve the 12-year-long Iran nuclear program issue. However, negotiations had to be extended to January 4.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zaif stated, “There are positive signs in the discussions. We decided to restart the talks at 6 or 7 o'clock and we hope to conclude them today (April 1st).” Zaif further affirmed, “Solutions have been identified for most issues.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was even more optimistic, stating to Russian media: “It can be said with relative certainty that we have reached an agreement in principle on key aspects of resolving this issue. The agreement will be finalized in the next few hours.” Lavrov emphasized that the announcement of the “provisional agreement will be made by Mr. Zarif and Ms. Federica Mogherini – the head of the European diplomatic service.”

Contrary to the optimistic attitudes of Russia and Iran, a US diplomat assured that “all issues remain unresolved.” Another source also stated that the agreement had “not yet” been signed. Regarding Minister Fabius, his office only stated that he had returned to Paris “to attend the Council of Ministers and will return as soon as possible,” without disclosing any further details about the negotiations.
