Some stores in Hanoi are selling a strange type of cucumber with yellow skin and many sharp thorns on the outside for 395,000 VND/fruit (1.6 million VND/kg).

Ms. Van, the owner of a high-end clean fruit store in Hanoi, said that the strange cucumber variety she sells has a yellow skin, many sharp thorns on the outside, the fruit is about 10cm long, and when cut open, the inside is green, has many seeds, and looks unlike any other cucumber in Vietnam.

According to Ms. Van, for Vietnamese people, this type of cucumber is a strange fruit. For Japanese people and some countries in the world, this is a quite familiar fruit. Because, this type of cucumber originates from Africa, and is grown in many tropical countries such as Australia, Chile, New Zealand, America, Japan, ...

A strange cucumber variety with thorny skin is being sold in the Vietnamese market.

The fruit of this melon looks quite strange, but the plant is similar to traditional melons in Vietnam, that is, the stem and plant are also climbing, the stem is thin, the time from flowering to harvesting is only about 15-20 days. When harvested, the fruit will reach an average weight of 250 grams, with some fruits weighing up to 0.5 kg.

Ms. Van also revealed that this strange cucumber is colloquially known as thorny cucumber or Kiwano cucumber. She imported it directly from Japan because this country grows it using organic methods, ensuring safety, quality, delicious, even, and beautiful fruit. After purchasing from the sources, the cucumbers are transported to Vietnam by air.

The price of this cucumber is listed among the most expensive cucumbers in the world. Specifically, the retail price per fruit is 395,000 VND/fruit, each fruit weighs from 250-300 grams, sold by weight, the price is 1.6 million VND.

“Although expensive, Japanese cucumbers are always out of stock.” Ms. Van said that Japanese cucumbers only arrive once a week, about 40 boxes, or about 320 cucumbers. This quantity is only enough to pay for customers who pre-ordered, and even customers who order close to the date often do not have the goods and have to make an appointment for the next time.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Van Quan, owner of a clean fruit shop in Kham Thien (Dong Da, Hanoi) also shared that imported prickly cucumbers from the land of the rising sun cost millions, 100 times more expensive than the price of good cucumbers from Vietnam, but still attract customers, and he is always in a state of shortage of goods to sell.

Mr. Quan said that his store sells up to 7 types of Japanese fruits, all of which are available, and when there are many customers, they have to order 1-2 days in advance. However, with the prickly cucumber, the goods are only enough to deliver to customers. Because, regular customers who often buy fruit at the store, when seeing this fruit, are curious and want to order some to try.

Ms. Vien Thi Phuong Linh in Thang Long International Village (Cau Giay, Hanoi) admitted that because she was so curious, she ordered 1kg of prickly cucumber to try.

Two years ago, she bought three bags of these cucumber seeds to plant, but the plants grew well without flowering or fruiting. After three failures, this time she saw them for sale on the market and immediately ordered them.

The price of this melon is sold at 395,000 VND/fruit.

However, many people who tried it said that the cucumber has a lot of seeds and flesh, thin flesh, and does not taste much different from Vietnamese cucumbers.

After waiting exactly 1 week, she received 1kg of cucumber (4 fruits) for 1.6 million VND. When she got home, she tried the fruit and found it had a lot of pulp, a strange aroma, and many thorns. However, if compared, Vietnamese cucumbers are still more delicious.

After that try, her two children were quite interested in the fruit's beautiful shape, so she regularly ordered 1kg every week for her children to eat sparingly instead of vegetables. Every day, she sliced 1 fruit into a mixed salad because it was quite expensive, she said.

In fact, this super strange thorny cucumber was once sold in Hong Kong supermarkets for about 170,000 VND/fruit./.
